Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
