In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
