The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
